Solar DC circuits remain energized as long as light reaches the panels — a genuinely different safety posture from AC circuits that can be fully de-energized.
A genuinely important safety distinction for anyone working on solar installations: a PV array remains electrically energized as long as it's receiving light, regardless of whether the inverter is switched off or the AC main is isolated — a fundamentally different safety posture from most AC electrical work.
Switching off an inverter or opening the AC isolation switch de-energizes the AC side of the system, but the DC array cabling, string wiring, and combiner boxes remain live at whatever voltage the array is producing under current light conditions — even covered by a tarp or working under cloudy conditions, some voltage is almost certainly still present.
Genuine DC isolation requires the actual DC isolator (rated and located specifically for this purpose, covered in the dedicated DC isolator articles) to be operated, not just the AC-side switch — and even then, cable between the panels and the isolator itself often remains live, since the isolator interrupts the circuit but doesn't de-energize the panels generating the voltage in the first place.
