Connector rating has to match the cable and array it terminates — a detail sometimes overlooked once the cable size itself is decided.
DC connectors — commonly known generically as "MC4" connectors after one popular original product — are the physical termination point for every solar string cable, and their rating needs to match the array's actual voltage and current just as much as the cable itself does.

| Current rating | Must exceed the applicable safety-margin-adjusted current, matching the cable's own sizing basis |
| IP rating | Outdoor, UV-exposed, potentially submerged connectors need genuine weatherproofing, not just a nominally water-resistant label |
Mating connectors from different manufacturers — even ones that physically appear to click together — is a well-documented cause of poor contact resistance and, in worst cases, arc faults, since different brands' contact geometries aren't guaranteed to be truly interchangeable despite superficial compatibility. Use matched-brand connector pairs consistently.
A perfectly sized cable terminated with a mismatched or undersized connector is still a weak point in the circuit — connector selection deserves the same deliberate attention as the cable itself.
