Legitimate Sources of Divergence
- Conservative vs minimum-compliant design philosophy — one engineer might round up for future load growth headroom; another sizes strictly to the current stated requirement
- Different reasonable assumptions about ambient conditions — where the actual installation environment isn't precisely specified, reasonable engineers can estimate slightly differently
- Different but valid installation method choices — a design decision (conduit routing vs tray, for instance) that itself changes the applicable base ampacity
What's NOT Legitimate Divergence — Actual Errors
- Using the wrong code's reference tables for the project's actual governing jurisdiction
- Skipping voltage drop or grouping derating entirely
- A calculation error (wrong formula, transposed input) rather than a genuine judgment call
The Practical Takeaway
