Practical Voltage Drop
A practical troubleshooting approach when a completed installation shows symptoms consistent with excessive voltage drop.
Symptoms like dimming lights under load, sluggish motor starts, or appliances that seem underpowered can point to voltage drop — but they can also point to several other unrelated issues. Here's a practical diagnostic approach.
Measure actual voltage at the load terminal under real operating load, and compare against the source voltage measured at the same time. A significant gap confirms voltage drop is genuinely occurring; a small gap points you toward other causes.
If voltage drop is confirmed, revisit the original design: was the actual installed run length accurately captured? Was the actual load current correctly estimated, or has the load grown since the original design (an added appliance, an upgraded motor)?
If cable-based voltage drop is the confirmed root cause, the fix is upsizing the conductor or shortening/rerouting the run — re-run the actual measured current and length through the applicable Voltage Drop calculator to confirm the corrected size.
