Single-Core vs Multi-Core Cable: Sizing Implications

The choice between single-core and multi-core cable affects installation practice and, in some cases, the applicable ampacity figures.

Single-core cable (one conductor per physical cable) and multi-core cable (multiple conductors bundled within one outer sheath) are both common, and the choice between them has real sizing and installation implications beyond simple preference.

Single-Core

Each conductor is its own physical cable, typically installed together in a conduit or on a tray. Grouping derating applies based on the actual number of current-carrying conductors present, following the same logic covered in the grouping derating article.

Multi-Core

Multiple conductors share one outer sheath as a single manufactured cable. Ampacity tables sometimes treat multi-core cable slightly differently from an equivalent bundle of single-core conductors, since the shared sheath changes the specific heat-dissipation geometry — always confirm which table category (single-core vs multi-core) actually applies to your chosen product.
