Before a cable sizing result becomes a material order, a quick verification pass catches most input-error mistakes while they're still cheap to fix.
The Checklist
- Does the design current match the actual load? A transposed digit or wrong unit (kW vs W, for instance) produces a confidently wrong result
- Was the correct code selected? Confirm the calculator tab matches the project's actual governing code
- Is the run length the real one-way distance, not round-trip? This is a common input error that doubles the effective voltage drop calculation incorrectly
- Does the installation method match reality? Conduit vs free air vs tray produces genuinely different base ampacity
- Which check governed the result — ampacity or voltage drop? Understanding why the recommended size is what it is helps catch an obviously wrong result before it ships
