Common Documentation Mistakes That Delay Permit Approval
A checklist of documentation gaps that commonly cause a permitting authority to send a submission back for correction.
A technically correct electrical design can still face permit delays because of documentation gaps that have nothing to do with the underlying engineering. Here are the recurring ones.
The Common Gaps
- Wrong or unclear code edition cited — see the dedicated PEC and NEC edition articles for why this specific detail matters
- Missing calculation backup — a final cable size without the supporting ampacity and voltage drop check shown, leaving the reviewer unable to verify the result independently
- Inconsistent numbers between documents — a load figure that differs between the single-line diagram, the load schedule, and the cable sizing calculation, even if each individual document is internally correct
- No explicit statement of which installation method and ambient conditions were assumed — leaving a reviewer unable to confirm the derating factors applied
- Missing or incomplete grounding/earthing documentation — a common gap even when the electrical design itself is sound
The Practical Fix
Treat documentation completeness as part of the design deliverable, not an afterthought filled in at submission time — a design that's technically correct but poorly documented faces the same delay as one with an actual error, from the reviewer's perspective.
