A reflection on why electrical codes diverge in specifics despite governing identical underlying physics.
Ohm's Law and thermodynamics don't change at national borders. So why do PEC, AS/NZS, and the NEC arrive at genuinely different specific numbers for conceptually identical scenarios?
Each code developed independently over decades, shaped by its own regulatory bodies, its own accumulated incident and safety data, and its own testing programs — not from a shared global dataset. Independent development naturally produces independently calibrated safety margins, even when the underlying goal is identical.
Reference ambient temperatures, typical installation practices, and common construction methods vary meaningfully by region — a code's tables reflect the conditions its drafters were actually designing for, not a universal abstraction.
Divergence between codes isn't a sign that one is "more correct" than another — it reflects genuinely different, independently validated engineering traditions solving the same underlying safety problem. Respecting whichever code actually governs your project, rather than assuming familiarity with one substitutes for another, is the professional discipline this demands.
