NEC Solar Safety
Rapid shutdown is a critical firefighter-safety feature under NEC 690.12, but it operates independently of conductor sizing.
NEC 690.12 requires rapid shutdown capability for PV systems on or in buildings — reducing conductor voltage to a safe level quickly after shutdown is initiated, protecting firefighters working near or on a roof during an emergency. It's a critical safety requirement, and it's also, like AS/NZS anti-islanding, not a cable sizing input.
Specific voltage and time thresholds that conductors outside a defined boundary must be reduced to within a specific window after initiation — achieved through module-level power electronics, string-level shutdown devices, or inverter-integrated shutdown functions, not through conductor selection itself.
