NEC 2023 vs Older Editions — Why the Edition You Reference Matters

The NEC is revised on a three-year cycle, and citing the wrong edition on a permit document is a real, avoidable problem.

The National Electrical Code is revised on a three-year cycle, and — as with the PEC edition article elsewhere in this series — citing an outdated edition on permit documentation is a real, avoidable source of review delay.

Why AHJs Care About the Specific Edition

Jurisdictions adopt a specific NEC edition into local law, often with local amendments layered on top — a jurisdiction might still be enforcing an older edition well after a newer one has been published nationally, or might have already adopted the newest edition ahead of some neighboring jurisdictions. There's no single universal "current" edition in force everywhere simultaneously.

What to Actually Do

• Confirm the specific NEC edition (and any local amendments) currently adopted by the AHJ before finalizing documentation — never assume based on the calendar year alone
• Note which edition OhmWorks' NEC data tables reference, and cross-check that against your project's actual governing edition
• When submitting for permit, explicitly cite the edition on your documentation rather than leaving it implied
